A design system with the blend of the old and new

Figma has recently launched Config 2023, introducing tons of new features that can accelerate the design process and facilitate the creation of exceptional products.

As a Product Designer, I am incredibly excited about these features, as I firmly believe Figma will enable new possibilities through them. This self-initiated project aims to explore and learn about these features, empowering designers to bring out the best in their work.

Designing a system from scratch and creating documentation of design guidelines for efficient collaboration among teams.

As the aim of this project is to understand and learn the possibilities of the new features of Figma, I won't spend enough time on doing user research or usability testing. The system will be built on my hypotheses and my previous experience working on design systems.

I will focus on the following:

- Building Design Foundation
- Core Component
- Documentation

Creating a cohesive and scalable design language and component library to ensure consistent and delightful user experiences across a wide range of digital products.

My focus is on designing a system from scratch and creating comprehensive design guidelines documentation. The primary objectives are to ensure consistency throughout the process and to learn new techniques while building the system.

I will focus on the following:

- Stay Updated
- Experiment Play
- Stay Open Minded
- Design Challenge

Design System

Design System

I will start by building a design system by utilizing all the latest update from Figma Config 2023. It will help to maintain the design system more efficiently.

I will try to create a easier and more realistic prototyping experience with Figma as new features like variable, scope and logics will help creating prototypes a breeze, with fewer steps, frames, and connections. So no more messy noodles in the canvas!

The scary part of the whole design process, THE DESIGN HANDOFF. So a propert documentation will allow developers  to easily find production-ready frames, sizes, and assets.

Defining the Design Principal

Maintain a consistent visual language and user experience across all digital products and platforms.

Design components and patterns that can be easily scaled and adapted to accommodate future growth and evolving needs.

Maintain a consistent visual language and user experience across all digital products and platforms.

Ensure that the design system is accessible and usable for all users, regardless of their abilities or disabilities.

Provide comprehensive and up-to-date documentation to guide designers, developers, and stakeholders in using and maintaining the design system.

Prioritize the needs and goals of the end-users, ensuring that the design system enhances their experience and supports their tasks.

Providing a meaningful user experience allows to define user journeys on product that are most conducive to business success.

I started by creating design assets that store fundamental values for the foundational layer of your design system, such as colors, typography, grids, elavation. These assets will be utilized within components, ensuring that any changes made at this base level will have a widespread impact throughout the entire system.

Easily accessible and scalable as the design system evolves

My objective is to write the documentation in a manner that allows developers to easily comprehend each component. I achieve this by providing detailed insights into their structure, behavior, and use cases.

I ensure that the skeleton of each component is thoroughly defined, enabling developers to maintain pixel-perfect designs effortlessly. This comprehensive documentation empowers seamless collaboration between design and development teams.

Chasing perfection with each of the update

Creating something from scratch is always enjoyable, and building a design system requires a wealth of design knowledge.

Working with Figma's numerous features in this project has been incredibly beneficial, helping me grasp design principles, scalability, and the value it adds to the team. Understanding Figma's new updates has been particularly insightful. The team focused on crafting a comprehensive component library, iterating and testing with users for feedback.

While no design system is flawless, effective communication and teamwork ensure a user-centered approach throughout the project, leaving room for continuous improvement.

Final Design

Established with a clear intention to constantly improve.

The completed design may not be perfect, but I have established a strong foundation that is both scalable and easy to maintain.

My goal is to continually improve the project by adding more components and incorporating new features over time. By acknowledging the need for ongoing enhancements, I am committed to refining the design system and ensuring a better user experience in the future.

What's Next?

Build, Test and Iterate

My next goal is to make a shared component library that are adaptive with change and make it live for others.

As I have build the foundation, I will continuously scale it. As new patterns and styles emerge, they can be integrated into the library, ensuring that the design system stays up-to-date and relevant.
